Homemade Millionaire - the day after

**This was my comment but it was too long so I had to make it a post***

To answer "anonymous" - Where is everyone? My guess is that so much time has passed since the auditions, that unless you made it on the show or are one of the few that check in regularly, most likely, people have simply lost interest in talking about the show. It's just been so long....

However, I am happy to see the show finally air!!!
I was up early this morning so I turned on HSN to see Marcy (the winner last night, not sure on the spelling of her name and too rushed to check) selling some sort of clutch that she could have easily been "placed" with. Her invention? Not sure if I buy that.

I was bummed to see that it's more about your "pitching" ability than the product - obvious observation due to the fact that Marcy's product was not being sold on HSN this morning...

Hey, I can pitch! I am even hired BY HSN but I am currently waiting to be "placed" with product - kinda like how Marcy was "placed" with product. Hmmm...

Look, it's television...I get that and if by being on TV AT ALL, helps these girls sell their products (loved the hot roller idea!), then GREAT!!! That's what it's all about anyway...seeing these creative WI's selling their inventions!

Kelly is so sweet that it would be too uncomfortable to see her give any harsh criticism so it's good they have the curly haired women on to deliver the punches. BUT...and there's always a "but"...her "helpful hints" seem...over-acted...

Ok, this is crazy, who am I to say? All I know is that I had no problem hitting "pause" to get a drink of water, check the kids, talk to my cousin who is visiting...text my hubby...

I'd like to see the show grow some momentum...and I am sure when Deedra hits the screen, it'll be full speed ahead!

Let's just hope that Homemade Millionaire has more staying power than Pitchmen Season 2!

I'm rooting for you "Homemade Millionaire"!

  1. I'm here!!!!! And I hope Lori, and Ginny, and Mary, and Jenn, and Roberta, and Marcy, everyone else (you know who you are) will post!!! :) Having NO idea how the show was going to look, my hubby and I were thrilled to sit down and watch and see how it all turned out. Parts made me laugh, and other parts made us both shudder. I was wearing the same outfit and Klipzon that I wore to the audition....way back when it was Mom, Inc. That headband was my first prototype. I was blow away by Marcy's presentation style, LOVED Tonya's product (anyone have any idea where to by it?) and thought Stephany's hair wrap was well produced (if I ever have long hair I'll try it!) I wish there was some of that "Where are they now" at the end of the show. I tried using the DVR for the HSN show, but they said Marcy was on at 7 and is was after that...so it didn't record her. Tracy, how'd she do? Did it show how many she sold? I so wanted to see that.

I recorded with my webcam (first time to do that) a sort review after the show....and then I didn't post it last night because I thought, "who is going to care what I think about the show...." So it was up for 2 minutes and then back down off the Klipzon facebook page. My husband told me to take it down and pray about it if I was having any doubts. Still don't know if I'll put it back up....we will see.

So, can't wait to see next week....I think the cupcake huggers is genius....and I want to see what tasks that group is given. AND I hope to get the chance to buy the product the next day!!!

    Lots o love,
    Deedra :)

  3. Hi Deedra,
Marcy did GREAT on HSN - like a pro! Hopefully we'll see her Styling Station on HSN soon and I can't wait to see what the "cupcake holders" are all about!
How are you feeling? Excited, I am sure!

  4. I agree with what you said Tracy about it seeming to be more about the pitch than the idea. I didn't articulate that in my post but that was exactly the feeling I got. Tonya didn't seem to have the pitching knack but as the judges were talking and deliberating they all seemed to think her product was the safer bet for products being sold. So I didn't get that when they actually chose Marcy.
Oh well, I will continue to watch and yeah Deedra I agree I wish there was an update or at lest a way for you to purchase the featured products after all it was suppose to be about helping inventors get their products from their kitchen tables to the store shelves, right? That was disappointing that that avenue was left untapped. :-( That type of exposure would have made a HUGE difference for those inventors. It's kinda like they stopped short.
Anxious to see Deedra's story. BTW I would love to see your commentary of the show my vote is put it back. :-)

  5. Hey ladies!!

I thought the first episode was good. I thought that HSN and TLC were going to help get the prototype made before pitching to the executive board. I think that was a bit unfair for Tonya, and I was upset that my gal Stefany was out so quick. I was hoping the show was more about the product, and not about presentation. I don't mean any disrespect to Marcy, she has a cool product. I think Marcy did a fabulous job on HSN yesterday and wish her much success. I can't understand why HSN did not have her product available for sale. The purse is a great product...but not why most tuned in.

I can't wait to watch next week. The gals from Bevi Bags are local to me, and Debra Lee's invention is genius for sure!!

There were a bunch of us tweeting during the commercials, please join in next week. I'm @carryher

  7. Hi Ladies!
It's me, Marcy McKenna. I just returned from HSN late last night and of course I couldn't wait to sit down to see what you all were saying. I want to clear up the confusion about why I was selling the Cambia Clutch when you tuned in to HSN. Because we finished taping Homemade Millionaire in May, due to manufacturing issues and the lengthy UL certification process, it wasn't physically possible to have The Styling Station ready in time for the show's air date--though we tried like heck! It is in production now and is scheduled for a Spring 2011 launch date--at which time they will re-air my episode. We were all as disappointed as you, as it was clearly the goal to have it ready for Nov 19. In light of the circumstances, rather than having nothing at air time, I proposed the idea of TLC and HSN looking at another of my inventions. They loved the idea, as the fact that I have many inventions was one of the key reasons for my being chosen as the winner. They ultimately want a "brand" at HSN. It so happens that I invented The Cambia Clutch while traveling back and forth to NYC during the taping of the show. The loved it and quickly paired me with Carlos Falchi (one of the best in the business) to bring it to life. So, yes it is definitely my invention and I was very excited to be selling it on HSN so quickly. I, too, wish they had been a bit more clear about that during the airing of my HSN segments. Oh well! I'm also in development on 4 more products for HSN, so look for those soon as well. You can follow my journey at my website www.simplysolvedinnovations.com or on facebook. I'm happy to answer any questions you all might have.
    Best,
    Marcy McKenna

  9. Hey ladies:

First of all, I have to give props to Marcy, a fellow SoCal girl. I think we can all agree that while the medicine cabinet has already been invented, turning it into the Styling Station is novel and a very cool idea! I know some of us were curious as to where exactly all of the cords go - I know Marcy said it powers everything down when the door is shut. Anyway - well done! It was immediately apparent to me that you were a front runner with your polished pitch, ect.

However, I think I can also speak for many of us who may be feeling a bit duped (there, I said it) at this point because of what we were told this show was going to be about. It wasn't "Who's the Next Fabulous HSN Host with a Brand to Sell" It was aimed at the Woman Inventor community - and there are a lot of bona fide inventors out here.

So what you are telling us that HSN is going to pick winners every week based on their Brandability (is that a word??) If so, I am not afraid to say how disappointed I will be.

I am going to stop now - and save the rest for my own review tomorrow.

Thanks Tracy for having the space here for us to communicate - hoping some of you will weigh in at Well Adjusted Or So They Say... tomorrow after my review is up.

  10. Can't wait to read the review Jen!

Marcy! So great to hear "the rest of the story!" I LOVE that. It's obvious that you have spent a lot of time on the front end with years of inventing...this show came at the right time for you. Well deserved! I can't wait to see the other products!

I'm headed over to Chris' blog to read...sounds interesting!

Can anyone give us an update on Stephany or Tonya?

  11. No offense but the interchangeable purse is not a new invention. Go to Michebag.com and see how this concept has been around for years. This show is a fraud.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The show is not a fraud. Marcy needed to get resourceful when her Styling Station could not be manufactured in time for November 19th. She has many other ideas too and you must give her credit for thinking so quickly on her feet. It takes SO much to get a new product out to market. From what I understand, the Styling Station will be available in the spring of 2011. Just go onto the blog at HSN and you can read it too. Life has many twists and turns but it's how you deal with them that makes ALL the difference. Marcy chose to deal with them head on, I respect that!

    ReplyDelete
  13. To address the post above, The Cambia Clutch is not necessarily a "new" invention and it was not the product that was submitted for the show--therefore it wasn't necessary that it be 100% new in concept and design. In fact, many of the products that are highly successful on both HSN and QVC are improvements upon something that already exists. "A better mousetrap" so to speak. The Clutch had nothing to do with the show, other than the fact the winner happened to invent it. It was simply another product that I was developing for HSN--they happened to like it and feel it could do quite well for them and also thought the audience would appreciate seeing what I'm up to now. It was never intended to replace The Styling Station--only to be another Marcy McKenna design. It's a creation that I conceived when taping the show and finding myself frustrated with the fact that I only had room in my suitcase for one purse yet I needed to pack 7 outfits. When I designed it, I had no idea the Michi bag existed. Upon further research I did discover it, but found that my concept is entirely different. The attachment detailing is an integral part of my purse and one that I have a patent pending on. It is a clutch purse and not a handbag. The designs are current and classic and season after season will be inspired by the runway. The aesthetic and quality are very high end. My goal was to make designer quality handbags accessible to those of us who can't afford them. The Michi bag is quite differnt and therefore targets an entirely different market. It does a great job at it, and the two bags do not compete at all.

I'm so sorry if you felt the show was a fraud or if you felt duped. I think if you look back at what they were looking for when the casting calls were done, it was not just a new invention created by a female, they were also looking for a person who could sell their product. The requirements said "You must have a great, outgoing personality and plenty of passion to back up your product or invention!" I'm sure that was HSN's requirement.

I hope this helps to shed a little light on what the show was intended to be. The "invention" part was obviously very important, but the "person" part was equally important due to the fact the winner would be selling on air to the HSN audience. I know moving forward they will be looking for the same thing. Having now spent a lot of time at HSN, I realize how important this part is. I'm fairly certain they will be casting again soon and I encourage you all to go fot it as it has been a truly incredible experience every step of the way! The people at HSN are top notch and have been a pleasure to work with.

  14. I really enjoyed finally seeing the show on the air. I felt that it was poorly advertised though.

Of course, they picked Marcy she was so squared away and focused how could they miss that! I do feel the product has drawbacks. First do you have to stuff the cords back in every time you use your appliances? It looks heavy and how on earth can you hang it without drywall screws. Another extremely disappointing point was the fact that they had Marcy on at 7am on a Saturday morning that's what 4 am West coast. WHo is even watching at that hour?. I thought that was a slap in the face for all the hard work she did and making it that far.
Next, are you kidding me with those curlers?????? It was a good idea in theory but we never got to see if they worked because even though she had a YEAR to get her product together she only shows up with 6 of the same size and No blowdryer to demonstrate how her products works or if it even does!!!!!!! I thought her lack of togetherness was painful to watch not to mention infuriating that she was given such an opportunity and really didn't rise to the occasion at all.

The pony tail hold is forgetful but a nice accessory.

I was just stunned that that was the block buster show. I wanted to know more about the women and there journey. We all have great ideas it's just that there happened to be in the same category so that's why they made it? The show also didn't flow and I heard many people say that is was kind of boring. It wasn't to me because I love that sort of thing but wishing for a second season may be just that wishful thinking.

I also think that grouping the inventions together really limits what they pick and they are missing a lot of fantastic ideas. Let's see the wonderful rainbow of ideas not just ones that fit in a certain group.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I agree emphatically with Anonymous above's comment, "Let's see the wonderful rainbow of ideas, not just ones that fit in a certain group." I'm thinking that the obviously contrived concept of trying to "fit" inventions into preordained categories (i.e. Beauty Products, Diet Aids, etc.) feels false and manipulated and doesn't generate too much excitement in the audience (as evidenced by the overall feedback I've gotten from friends who tuned in - all wanting to LOVE it). It is self-limiting television at its best - and it's a shame because it needn't be that way. The foundation of the show is so dynamite! I don't know who decided upon this format (I can understand how -at first blush - it might have seemed plausible - but in actuality, it is a bit lackluster to the viewer and feels like it's forcing products - whether worthy or not - into a pat, scripted hour-long show. Feedback that I've received has not been favorable...and I think that, sadly, the intelligence of the audience has been underestimated with this show. It doesn't bode well for a second season unless they think outside the box and come up with a different, less constrained take on product selection. But, of course, it is what it is now and the dye has already been cast. I DO wish the ladies well, though, they all have my respect and deserved support. Ginny

  16. Just read through everyones comments and sadly the overall feel that I'm getting here is that of disappointment in the way the shows set up turned out. Great respect for the Ladies involved from myself and most who have chimed in to comment. I too am left wondering why they didn't take Tonya's idea to a presentable/working level for the competition. that would have made a world of difference for her I think. Well I know all of us are tuning in or recording next week because we have so much heart invested in it. Not so sure the general public will continue to tune in though.

  20. I just wanted to mention that Tonja's MagiKurl did seem like a good idea. She said she was sure that it would work but didn't even try it? She claims she has a patent? I think that the plastic roller, (the velcro part) is so tiny it would just melt when it got hot from the blow dryer. I have been trying to find mine to try it. Especially with the metal in it. I think she must have known that and that's why she didn't demonstrate it. It seems like she would have to have it manufactured out of heat resistant plastic.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I haven't read that anyone has been insulted? What are you referring to?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Please forgive me, that was one of those "note to self" "thinking out loud" comments. I suppose it's meant as a broad statement regarding inevitable questions (which are rhetorical at this point) that seem to be arising.

I will speak for all of us who attended one of the casting calls in either NYC, Chicago, Dallas or LA and say that maybe there is a feeling of being insulted by the "process".

    ReplyDelete
  31. The above link for google patents clearly shows that the styling station is infringing. The first step an inventor takes is to make sure by checking with the USPO or google patents that an idea is not already patented.

There are a lot of women that just want to be famous, and saw this casting call as an opportunity. You can clearly see the women that have passion about their ideas and products, and the ones that came up with or stole an idea in a skinny minute.

Shame-shame -shame on HSN and TLC for not doing the proper research on the styling station, and velcro rollers. These products are already patented.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Very interesting Anonymous above...I did not even think of patent infringement...with all of these mishaps, it's only a matter of time until the show is canceled and that's really a shame b/c there are so many wonderful and true inventions out there!
I have yet to run across a good review of the show...
Also, this occurred to me last night...Milojo is a "newer" production company - this can't be good for their credibility...or does credibility even matter? Hmmm....

    ReplyDelete
  33. I don't believe I'll be checking in with this blog any longer. It's a shame how everyone has forgotten to support their fellow women inventors. All involved in this blog understands or should understand how much time, money, and effort is put into a new product. Irregardless of how the show was put together, there are real people with families at the other end of this... just like your own families. Too many large companies are out there to simply take our inventions right out from under us. The show's opportunity is exposure and the exposure is extreme! There are many challenging years of perseverence for every inventor. We should all respect that and be positive instead of negative. Positive attitude is what moves us forward, bringing incredible opportunities one day.

    ReplyDelete
  34. You know, after a cursory look at the patent info indicated above, I really did not see an infringement in that Marcy's product includes a more sophisticated electrical element to it and the one cited in that patent does not - that one is simply a cabinet for storing hair appliances. Are we being a little snarky here in this regard? Is this a case of trying to find fault, perhaps, even where none exists? I'm certainly hoping not! As for the entry above, this is a forum and will attract all sorts of comments; it's just the nature of things. I for one would be beyond happy to see ANY of our products make it big time and, indeed, for ANY of us (associated with the show or not) succeed in having their invention bring them the distinction, respect (and wealth!) they seek. In other words, I believe that 99% of our intentions, thoughts and wishes on this site are all good - at least that's what I'm hoping is the case. Otherwise, I would not be here myself and would quickly disassociate myself from anything less than a supportive environment! While we may not all agree on what makes a product "great," that is what makes the world go round and that is what consumerism is all about. I'd personally love to see both Tonya's and Marcy's product succeed royally (and Deedra's, too!) Wouldn't that be a kick! Ginny

    ReplyDelete
  35. Well said Ginny. I think we've been cheerleaders for the inventors themselves but there is an obvious disappointment in the make-up of the show. The way that they chose to pit one inventor against another and then to focus on their ability to pitch the product being looked at equally if not more so than the idea is a little disheartening to us inventor types. we like to think that if the idea is awesome that's the clincher. I for one would love to see all the chosen women to get their products on store shelves not just one from each category. I think we all are happy for the woman involved but not so much for the shows format. I don't see this as "negative" just disappointed there is a huge difference between the two.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think it's safe to say that no one here has or is faulting Marcy or any other WI...it's the show itself I am disappointed in...as for all "Inventor" shows, it's TV and the goal is to get viewers so people like myself who invested time and a great deal of money sees a very valuable lesson...somethings are not what they seem...bottom line...

    ReplyDelete
  37. **Typically I don't do this but I am going to respond directly to this post with my direct comments - my words in the ( )*** I don't believe I'll be checking in with this blog any longer. (Sorry to hear that but you're posting under "Anonymous" so I don't know who you are). It's a shame how everyone has forgotten to support their fellow women inventors. (Not true - almost every "negative" comment is accompanied with a "cheer" for the WI). All involved in this blog understands or should understand how much time, money, and effort is put into a new product. (I believe it is completely understood about money, time and effort. Practically everyone here is in that boat).Irregardless of how the show was put together, there are real people with families at the other end of this... just like your own families.(Get the family point - with the money I spent auditioning for what I believe to be a very misleading show concept, I could have logged precious family time on vacation making memories). Too many large companies are out there to simply take our inventions right out from under us. (True but how is this show helping the Styling Station at this point?). The show's opportunity is exposure and the exposure is extreme!(This is a very valid point and if you look back at the comments, I think you will see that we all agree). There are many challenging years of perseverance for every inventor.(Been there, done that). We should all respect that and be positive instead of negative.(Once again, not being negative about the WI, just the show, rightfully so). Positive attitude is what moves us forward, bringing incredible opportunities one day. (That and being realistic with our eyes opened and this experience for most of us was a real eye opener!).

  39. Hi My name is Robyn Zimmer and I will be appearing on Dec. 10th in the "Home" edition of Homemade Millionaire. I have a patented unique, product called Window Origami. I can not say if I won or lost yet but can say that there is a real life drama that occurs during the filming of this show and it will be different than any other episode. I hope you will all watch and give honest feedback and comments. Being an inventor and bringing something truly unique to the market is extremly difficult. This show can be the opportunity many of us have been looking for. I hope you all Keep watching.....

  42. After I read the first 30 or so comments on this board I have to say I was a little disgusted with all of you. As an inventor who didn't make the first episodes I couldn't believe your attitudes. Most of you here know how hard it is to pitch your product. Marcy did a great job! HSN or QVC would naturally want a product line over a single object. She said straight away that she had 16 other inventions. It is all about the money. Everyone should have known that. It also isn't up to them to search a patent it is the inventors lawyers to blame if they missed something. I also didn't think they would show the most inventive object on the first show. What will keep the attention of the audience? I am sure they will present different challenges weekly also. I for one was on the edge of my seat wondering if I could have done it! There are lessons to be learned from this show and I want to commend all the effort put into airing it. After all it is a chance of a lifetime for those girls and who knows maybe QVC will pick up the hair rollers or Goody or someone else. Let's support each other. If you didn't make it your turn will come. Hope for another casting, invent something else or learn from the show and re-pitch. My hats off to all three, you did your best and that is all that can be expected. Good Luck all. I for one WILL be watching!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Good Luck Robyn and Deedra. Something good will turn up for each of you in the end. I wouldn't be surprised if all the inventors don't land contract with some company if not HSN. What great exposure. I can't wait..

    ReplyDelete
  44. Marcy, You did an awesome job. You looked as they said, well polished. I am sure HSN will have a long term relationship with you. I am a control freak as you said you were. The only thing different, I think I would have wanted to rip the camera out of the girls hands and say. "I'll take that picture." Or did you want to do that also? (In the before and after)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Oh look at that, a slap on the wrist. a little disgusted with all of you? Easy to say under the title anonymous. Oh yes and you are perfect, no? Whatever. you are probably a friend of Marcy or something. Whatever. When you have the guts to insult everyone here with posting your name then I will listen. Whatever.

    ReplyDelete
  46. It is not just up to the inventor to check for patent infringement. You can be sure that a mega giant selling machine has made sure that Marcy's product isn't an infringement. The average infringement case is about 1 million in lawyer fees so I'm sure there bases are covered. I do believe that Marcy's product is different enough with the way that the appliances power down when the door is closed which is genius! We as contract holders where required to carry indemnification insurance which would cover the inventor if there was a law suit.

I think that you've won just being on the show and being exposed to all of those potential contacts not to mention the ride of your life. I sure hope there is a second season and maybe they will tweak the show to be even better. I just wish everything wasn't about a competition. Why couldn't you just be chosen because of your ideas merits and sale ability and journey. I guess that's just the way it works here in AMerica and I guess we should be grateful for any opportunity. Most women in many countries are treated like dogs much less this amazing opportunity.

I wish you all well and I hope to be in your shoes one day.

  48. I wish I was a friend of Marcy's. She is someone to watch because she is going places. No, I don't know her. Those girls did a great job, all three. It was nerve wracking I am sure. I see you posted anonymously also!

  49. Good luck to everyone with their products...so hard isn't it? Hey a win for Marcy and Kelly is a win for all of us. I am being considered for season 2....http://tinyurl.com/mwc6m8

  50. Wow, what a feather in Marcy's cap. It said that her husband is a producer in Orange County. Lucky to be around that environment.

  53. And just to add my congratulations, too, to all the women on the first show and to those who follow. Especially to Marcy, the winner of Friday's edition. I saw her on an HSN "quick buy" segment and she really shines on air! I'm very much looking forward to Robyn's segment (love her idea or what I can gather of it from the website!). My product would have been a "home" item, too, so I'll be watching enthusiastically on December 10 and, of course, our Deedra on the 17th. I think I'm hearing some negative stuff but, please, let us not become catty or allow the green monster to rear its ugly head (women are too often accused of that; let's prove that old addage completely untrue here!) :-) Happy Thanksgiving to all! 54. I was told by the Milojo office just a couple weeks ago that they would decide after ratings came in for season one, then they would decide on season two. At that time, they really hoping that there would be a season two but could not be sure until after ratings.

BUT, as you all know, plans change. I guess if it's a good source that said season 2 is a go, then it is!

  57. Okay, Robyn...I have to apologize. I did not see the slideshow that you offer on your site when I first looked. I only saw the black-bordered homepage! Even so, I was able to see a bit of your idea from the little bottom pictures and liked it. But NOW that I've seen the slideshow...well, this is really is one clever and beautiful idea! I don't know what your competition is on the show, but I would venture to guess there will be a big market for this product. It is a wow! Very cool. I wish you well, Robyn, and would be surprised if you didn't win. Ladies, I suggest you check it out!

On another note, I did as Marcy suggested and checked out Chris Nicola's blog and it was very interesting and led me to other blogs (TLC & HSN) relative to the show - all equally as interesting - and Marcy's interview (which was great and provided fun backstories to her journey!) I understand that each winner will have such an interview. Nicely done. Also, there are opportunities to leave comments. Most interesting are the many, many ladies who are clammering to learn where they can go to cast for upcoming shows. Tons of women out there who now have learned about the show and badly want IN! There clearly will be stiffer and much greater competition now that there is broad recognition of the show and its possibiities for women inventors. This should be interesting to watch going forward!

  58. I found Chris's blog but I couldn't find Marcy's interview. Could you please post a link so we can all read it? Thank you

  59. Pressed for time right now, Anonymous above...but directly at the end of Chris Nicola's blog about "What it takes...," (and anyone can just Google that) there is a link to "Weekly Winner's Interview" and that's Marcy's interview. At the end of her interview are other links to related show topics. Hope that helps...gotta start cooking for tomorrow now! Ginny
