Homemade Millionaire on TLC - Episode 4

Fast forward to the juicy parts...see which WI wins and tune in to HSN when I wake up...that is where I am now with HM. But let's not dwell on the obvious mistake of producing another cookie cutter inventor show because what is done is done. A complete missed opportunity by Milojo, TLC and HSN. *Sigh*

With Luv-A-Cuva getting the awesome endorsement by Kelly and Mark, "this would save our marriage," I was certain that Haris Lender was going to win but I have no doubts that Luv-A-Cuva will be on the shelves of my local Bed Bath and Beyond very shortly!

When adorable Sarah Haviland and super driven Robyn Zimmer were presenting their products, I could see my Grandmother, living in her small, one traffic light town, purchasing Window Origami but cleaning products? Surely HSN had enough cleaning products on air this very moment that they would choose something completely original...AKA Window Origami.

Wrong once again...

Sarah Haviland and her husband Mike - who did an awesome job pitching "Think" - win and I am bewildered.

Also, I am kicking myself.

Let me tell you why...My Husband owns a company that develops and manufactures industrial, environmentally safe, cleaning products. They are the third largest cleaning chemical company in the country.

You mean I could have "tweaked" one or several of Jason's cleaning products (added fragrance, oil, blood sweat and tears), added a cute label and WON HM?!?!

I sure missed the boat on that one but enough about me, it's all about Sarah and her "Think Natural Household Cleaner." I'm very excited that she also sold out on HSN but how many units are we talking here? Since all of the winners are "selling out," it's making me suspect of quantity available.

Sarah, could you fill us in? Or any other of the winners that are reading Product X...want to let us know?

I also noticed that "they" changed the packaging a little bit...and the "drama" I was waiting for...Sarah on bed rest...SO glad she is OK!

I am really looking forward to next week (yea Deedra!) but someone please tell me where and when to find the show...I did a half hearted search and can not find HM...

Women Inventors are the driving force of over half of the products we use (ok, I might be exaggerating, but you get the picture)so Homemade Millionaire or no Homemade Millionaire, I love and support any and all Women Inventors!

  1. Did anyone watch the Barbara Walters special with Oprah? Oprah is partnering with Discovery Health with her new network OWN. This is a positive thing ladies!! Oprah wants to create good tv... I'm certain she will not have shows about polygamy. TLC has really gone down hill. I'm sure Oprah thinks HM is perfect for OWN!! :)

Tracey, I think I read somewhere that they sold out of 700 magic dresses. That number is very small considering the amount of people tuning in to HSN.

  2. Most of the inventors sold more than 100 units by the minute! THAT is NO easy task! They didn't even need the amount of time given their product to sell out! Larger unit prices for every upcoming run is what their future holds. HSN has reasons for all the product chosen and by the looks of it, they have done a great job! Yes, the show could have been advertised better and spoken of more often but you can't hide the fact that these inventors have proven themselves. I'm very happy for them and wish them all of the successful coming their way.

  3. Hi Everyone,

Although Window Origami was not selected it was a great experience. We finished filming 7 months ago and I have had all of that time to absorb the shock that HSN did in fact choose "another" cleaning product over my unique Window Origami. I do wish Sarah and Mike much success! Sarah is adorable and came across well on the show.As for Haris, I thought she would be my competition and was surprised that she was let go so quickly. Now she is my friend. At least the Luva Cuva and Window Origami are both fabric products for the home. My website www.windoworigami.com has gotten over 6500 hits and amazing comments and so many people wanting to purchase my product. If I only had product to sell! Now the real work begins and I will trying to open a few more doors. Being an inventor and trying to bring a new product to the market is an adventure. There are many ups and downs but the key is to keep going , even if it is in a different way.- Robyn Zimmer-Inventor of Window Origami

  4. So glad you're continuing to forge ahead with your invention, Robyn. Sarah was a good competitor but, like you, I was very surprised with the results of that show. I for one love your idea and thought for sure that it would be the winner. You have a great innovative idea and presented it well. I'd love to see it in a store like Bed, Bath & Beyond very soon. I know I would buy it. For what it's worth, I'm the quintessential HSN customer, and I really believe it would have done wonderfully well there. So be it. I'm glad to hear that your site has received all those hits. I'll bet there are women out there chomping at the bit to get their hands on those panels I wish you every success in getting this to market. Best, Ginny

  5. Hi Robyn!
I know it was a shock to not be picked. It's all about $ so It came down to who could sell more product I bet. The gentlemen that was the HSN rep did say that he thought you could sell hundreds of thousands of units. That had to make you fell good! I wish you much success and I applaud you going through that with such strength. It looked so scary and stressful I wonder how I would have held up. I was a contract holder as well. I will be really interesting to see where this goes. I will say it again ladies just put yourself out there you never know!

  6. yeah, when they had the auditions and said , "do you have a product that will make you people say 'why didn't I think of that' the first things I thought of "a natural cleaner" cause there is NOTHING out there like that, is there? Only hundreds! NO offense to Sarah. She seems like a very lovely lady. Just a strange choice for HM when it was supposed to be an auditions for inventions, not just new branding for a product that is already out there. The other 2 products definately fit the bill.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Even if HSN sells their product out, it's advertising dollars and viewership that keeps a show on TV. Selling out won't keep the show on air. I think it's over for HM. Yes, Tracy, you should have just rebranded your husbands products and made millions. Now we know.

    ReplyDelete
  8. No offense to Sarah and Mike but my thought when I heard of these products made from harmless household supplies was. . . .yeah I will make some myself just Google and ta-da. I have used vinegar and baking soda for cleaning for years and sea salt is a great abrasive for cleaning the tub. These sounded like home remedies to me not an actual product line. I was very surprised that it won and I would make my own not purchase it. Just my two cents.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I think all three products were great and I too thought Robyn was going to win, however they did say they had nothing like Sarahs cleaning products on HSN. so let's be fair here. She did come up with the formula, all natural and all 4 judges raved on the scents! She is cute, personable and looked so clean herself. She sold her cleaning products to me and I didn't ever need to smell them. I think they are buying the whole package here.
I loved the curtains but I for one don't have time to fiddle with them once they are up. It is a wonderful idea and I am sure she will sell millions but to be honest, there are as many curtains as cleaning products. YES, YES, YES, I know they are not interchangeable.
Tracy, I don't think the show is over by a long shot. Discovery health, Oprah, It a good thing! No missed opportunity there. (Not if you read those contracts)
Lori, What does that mean? You were a contract holder? Did they let you out of it?

    ReplyDelete
  10. They are not letting contract holders out until sometime in 2011. I asked almost begged but it fell on deaf ears. They said that they had put a lot of money into the show and no one is getting out until they say so.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Then why did Lori say she was a contract holder? Please explain?

    ReplyDelete
  12. I was a contract holder that didn't get chosen for season one and am still bound to the contract until they decide to release us.
    Lori

  13. Did anyone see the new Milojo website?

  14. Shark Tank returns 2011 !!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Thanks Lori, I was just curious why you said you were a contract holder. I guess it was a typeo.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I am a contract holder not a typo. What are you referring to? There are several of us still out there that have contract with TLC/Milojo/HSN that have not been released because we may be in Season 2 if there is one.
    Lori

    ReplyDelete
  17. I was referring to you post at 1:06 where you said your were a contract holder, that's all.

    ReplyDelete
  18. No problem, but what, can I ask did you think was a typo?

    ReplyDelete
  19. It was just that you said "were" instead of you are a contract holder. Technically you are still a contract holder, right? I thought maybe they discharged some of the girls, That was all.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh gotcha: ) I see what you were getting at. As far as I know from everyone on here, no one has been let go, and your right I did say were sorry.
    Lori

    ReplyDelete
  21. I was just curious. I am still bound to the contract as well. Somehow, I think it is a good thing. This will work out well for all of us. Robyn posted that she had something like 6500 hits to her web site. Not bad for not being chosen. How about any of the others who were not chosen? Any information would be helpful. Any good leads for anyone's product?

    ReplyDelete
  22. With Oprah's backing, the sky is the limit so I am keeping my fingers crossed that she/OWN keeps HM!
There is a comment on the last post that I want to address: "Where would they find the time?" refereeing to having each episode be more of a "human interest" story.
What I thought would be a great show would be choosing just one WI for each show and focus on the reality of that WI instead of it being a competition. If you saw my OWN show pitch idea, it would have followed that format. I wish, just for curiosity sake, to see if a show like that would be successful because as we all know, you'll never know until you try.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Tracy,
Start formulating! This world wants good SAFE products. So what she came up with THINK. Look how many different beauty products there are and how many different/similar products there are across the board. You already own the company. Tweak your products and make them even better. There is room in the market place for everyone. She already proved that people want it. Go for it and call it Queen of Clean, ha ha!
    Lori

    ReplyDelete
  24. Precisely, Tracy. I had thought, initially, that the show would feature one inventor's journey - starting with the first glimmer of their concept and through the entire process of manufacture, marketing and becoming shelf ready. I was kind of blindsided when I learned that it was going to be competition of the type it developed into. That just wasn't how I'd hoped it would play out. I guess I thought they'd feature one woman each week - encompassing their entire story - and, based upon the merit of their product, after the six episodes and the six inventions, an opportnity on HSN would be the winner's reward. I can't imagine why else they would have delved into my personal life during our phone calls? That said, at least this format allows for a winner each week - and that's a "very good thing" (to quote Martha!). Ginny

  28. I have an announcement that hasn't been made yet...ALL profits from KLIPZON 2010 sales will go to restarting the children's charity "The Lemon Squeeze Foundation" that I started in California 4 years ago. Now that we are in Texas, we have to rebuild. It's a foundation that helps kids learn about the joy of giving through charity work. I teach kids that just like squeezing a lemon, giving can feel a little uncomfortable at first, but once you do it you can make great lemonade!

Reader's diagest picked our work as people making a difference in our community. If you'd like to see a fun video about it, here it is:

    http://www.rd.com/video/the-lemon-squeeze-foundation/video80309.html

I want to work to make The Lemon Squeeze Foundation a resource to kids across the nation to find something local where they can find a place to serve others.

Lots came out of my time in the hospital...a new business, Klipzon, the foundation....thanks for letting me share so of it with you.

    3 more days....

  30. Deedra,

What a wonderful foundation. The bible tells us that the lord will work things to the good for those who love him. That is so evident here in all that has come from your experiences. You are a great testament to how God can work in someones life.

You are so generous to give your profits from the klip-onz. Just one more reason for me to be praying that you won HM.

    PS
Count me in on the on-line party Friday afternoon at 1pm correct?

  31. Just watched the video and - oh my, Deedra - you are something else! I love the way you think! What a heartwarming cause and what a wonderful woman you are to have thought of it. 33. Lori,

Your so naughty. I thought the same thing - followed that same train of thought but thought I better not point out the obvious cuz Deedra's not suppose to tell. I must say I will be so disappointed if Dee doesn't win. Dare I say there just might be an on-line riot? LOL 2 more days and counting.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Maybe Deedra meant that in a general way. Even if she didn't make it to HSN I bet she is ready to go in time and will get a million hits on her website as soon as the show airs. I know she can't say anything. I feel that she is a golden child. I mean how many people are like her and does what she does. From a mother of a special needs child it is very touching. I notice other kids really don't know how to act around my son until they get to know him. By her doing this, it really will be like a ripple effect and it's wonderful. Not only is Deedra's glass half full it's over flowing and filling up all the glasses as far as the eye can see.
    I'm inspired!!!!!!!
    Lori

  35. Lor,

Well said. I too am inspired by Deedra's story. I have a special needs brother. So I think those of us close to this in any way are doubly touched by Deedra"s generosity.

    Anxiously awaiting Friday noon.

  36. Okay so we are in countdown mode for Deedra's episode and I go to set my DVR and panic sets in. Was it yanked entirely? Can't find it on TLC, Discory or Discovery Health. I checked 10pm, 12pm, and 12am for all those channels on Friday and 12am Sat. What gives?? I can't find it. When I entered Homemade Millionaire into the search on my DVR it came up blank. Please help me out I don't want to miss your big debut.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Mary,
i just checked Discovery Heath and her episodes is showing Dec 17th at 10 PM. I didn't know if you knew that moved from TLC to Discovery Health.
    Lori

    ReplyDelete
  38. The episode is on 10 Eastern/Pacific and 9 Central on Discovery Health. Unfortunately, Discovery Health Channel has not changed it on the TV, and at the moment it says that a show called "Sex Robots" is showing. We should be able to watch and/or record at that time and see Homemade Millionaire. If it is actually Sex Robots, then we can assume it's cancelled.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hmmmm. Good thing I love you Deedra. What will my Husband and children think when they see that I have set the DVR to record "Sex Robots"? Glad to hear it is on at 10pm and not 12 noon. Because who ever might manage to watch seeing as even when I deliberately tried to find it by googling and looking up with my DVR and at the source discovery I failed to find it. Okay point being I think more people will follow over to HSN if it is at 10 and not noon. So I'm off to set the DVR and I will admit I am a little embarrassed. I'll have to be sure and explain before hand rather than after to Hubby and grown daughter. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  40. Today is Deedra's big day so let's send her our congrats and prayers!

  46. Okay, ladies, I am so bummed out I can't even begin to tell you. In anticipation of Deedra's show, I wanted to find out exactly where Discovery Health was and consulted my channel guide. A gazillion channels offered by Cablevision, but NOT Discovery Health! Disappointed?! This is the episode I (like many of you) MOST wanted to watch, and I now have no way to see it. I guess I'll have to be content to come back here after the show airs to learn the outcome and hear about it from you. I am so, so sad. Ginny

  47. Ginny,
Can you keep looking I couldn't find it either and then my husband found it at some really strange number like 152. If you go to your provider on line you can search for every channel that they offer in your area. good luck.

  48. Thanks, Lori. I already did so. It's not there. And then, after further investigating, I found a lot of annoyed subscribers of Cablevision lamenting the fact that Cablevision does not offer Discovery Health. Who knew? I had just assumed I had it. Enjoy the show - which starts in about three minutes - and I'll meet you all back here at 11pm. Sniff, sniff. I'm SO p.o.'d!!! Ginny

  49. Okay...I missed the show for the above reason...but I tuned in to HSN and, forgive me, but ONCE AGAIN I do NOT understand how these products are determined to be the winning products...I am SO sorry I missed our Deedra. Would someone fill me in and explain to me why this convertable jewelry (which is awfully high priced) won over Deedra's Klipzon? I am getting very discouraged with the show. I meam no offense to the winner, truly, but come on!!! Ginny

    ReplyDelete
  50. Ginny,

Deedra did such a wonderful job her final presentation was spot on. Her competitor Grace did not do as well as Deedra I thought. And as the focus group and the Judges both pointed out Deedra had a great personality very likeable. Grace was too technical and lacked emotion and personality. The on thing positive that the judges commented on with graces presentation was that HSN biggest bread winner is jewelry and Graces product was jewelry. And so. . . . .Deedra didn't win. :-( Well she did as far as I was concerned but the judges did not pick her.
So there you have it in a nutshell.

    ReplyDelete
  51. THANK YOU, Mary!! I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the recap despite the fact that I'm so disappointed that Deedra didn't win. I don't want to be cynical, really I don't...but I'll be very interested to see the HSN sales (and reviews) of this very expensive "fashion" jewelry. I think the judges missed the boat on this one. Big time. I'm not saying that I don't support Grace in her endeavors...but I'm just sayin'... Deedra had a product that really fulfilled a need for a lot of women and girls. That's all. Ginny

    ReplyDelete
  52. Ginny,

I always forget that they show it on HSN right away. Maybe because they only advertise for 7am not right after the show. I remember someone said that they do it right after but I haven't caught it yet. Funny how you get it that they should have chosen Deedra and you didn't even see the show. I'm telling you Ginny I thought all the way through that Dee had it in the bag. I think it came down to the almighty buck and the fact that they could make tons more selling jewelry than they could selling a hair accessory. i think part of it was they wanted the shock value of choosing Grace over Deedra cuz really I don't think anyone saw that coming.

I bet though Deedra gets tons and tons of hits on her website and facebook page.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Have you seen the price point for these convertabale pieces? They range from $69.95 to $129.95. I've said it before, I've shopped HSN for many, many years (and I really do love this retailer). In fact, I bought two pairs of earrings earlier this evening. So I think I'm a fairly typical HSN customer. I'm not so sure that the savvy HSN customer is going to want to shell out that kind of money for these items. I may eat my words (and hope for Grace's sake that I will), but I don't think so. I'm glad to hear that Deedra did well, Mary...I would have been surpised if otherwise. Thanks again for the speedy update. Ginny P.S. Deedra, if you're tuning in, you are a winner in OUR eyes!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Deedra,
i promise there will be many doors that will open up for you because of this experience. Won't it always be something interesting to talk about for the rest of your life, not to mention that your boys will be so proud of you for going all the way with your idea! My word I couldn't believe how great you came across on t.v.!!!!!!!!!! You didn't even seem nervous I swear I was just amazed.

I have to say that sure they picked Grace because her product no doubt hit a larger market. Being a patent holder of a magnetic clasp I can tell you that her poorly thought out magnetic clasp system will not stay on. If you happen to snag that very expensive bracelet on anything it will fall right off. If you pick up a child you won't even realize that it fell off. There is also a lot of convertible jewelry out there and the price was astronomical. On the other hand Deedra, can you go for the Boutique client with your product? Great job and let us know where this leads.

  55. MAN! If only Ginny and Mary could have been on the panel I would have been a shoe in!!!! :) :)

Well, there you go. Second place. Our 6 year old stayed up and watched with us and when they announce Grace he said, "Mom, you're being a good sport even though you didn't win. I KNOW! You should have made necklaces too so you could have both won!" :) A sweetheart.

So, it was a fun night. I feel like I won just cause I didn't look like a crazy woman on national TV! :) :)

  56. Deedra,

I know you said you'd be here at 12 to answer some questions so I'm gonna be the first to put some out there. I went to your site cuz I loved some of the headbands you came up with for the final presentation. Especially the black one that the background was sheer and there was a floral design on it. Well I have to say I was a little disappointed that you only have two for your barrage of customers. Or weren't you expecting oh 600 or so hits? I am curious though why only 2 designs? And my second question what else do you have hiding up your sleeve. I did not know that you were an Author. And until the other day I did not know that you started a charitable organization either. Wow you are one busy Lady. I love your Bible Verse ABCs book and am wondering how to get an autographed copy?
Loved watching you and you came off - on TV just as you do on here - A classy sweet happy Lady. And by the way - You should've won!

  57. Deedra,
Did you feel that you could approach any of the panel of people at HSN after the show is done airing? Did anyone give you their number. You may still have a chance don't you think? So is your contract done or do they also chime in if anything comes from your show airing?

You don't need me to tell you that your boys are your most important accomplishment and you should be proud of the lesson that young man learned.

  59. Hey Homemade Millionaire I have an idea how about the two winners go on to sell their product and then who ever sells the most is the ultimate winner. Wouldn't that be neat than all of these wonderful ideas get a chance and then the viewer would decide.
    Lori

    ReplyDelete
  60. Oh Lori you just gave me an idea. How bout they bring back the runners up and have them go against each with the audience voting. Hmmm I'm thinking there may have been a different outcome.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Sounds good to me Mary. We should fax the producers : )

    ReplyDelete
  62. The way I look at it. It's the audience that is going to buy the product so it would make more sense than them second guessing what the public wants.

    Deedra,

    Are you still with us?

You know this is a rather inconvenient way to communicate I have to keep typing a password to get my post on and then I have to refresh to see if anyone has added anything. I say we take this over to facebook and IM on there with Deedra on her FB? What do you think Ladies?

  66. Sorry, was taking pictures of the TV so I could post them on my facebook page. :)

I only have the two up, because, frankly, when we had some twists and turns with the adoption, we had to empty out our accounts...and then moved....and then the economy....you know. So, I had to set aside some things in life to focus on keeping our little guy with us. Starting a business is costly and without HSN to help, we had to budget. So, here we are. :) BUT, you know the outcome of the adoption...so ALL IS WELL. Even with a 2nd place on HM. :)

  68. Deedra, I had to turn in at 11:30pm last night. I hope you learned that I COULD NOT get Discovery Health (I found out at the eleventh hour!) and I missed you. Darn! I am still so disappointed! Having heard you did a remarkable job, I am here to congratulate you heartily! I, too (like Mary), would love to see Goody or Scunchi pick up this item...and, BTW, I think your son is a fine boy and you raised him "right!" You know, I guess HSN is really into "convertible" items but the irony is that most of them are just a passing novelty...a "more for your money" marketing mentality that often doesn't work. Kind of like the "all you can eat buffet" that leaves you feeling full, but not quite satisfied in any aesthetic way. Jennifer's Magic Dress, for instance, sold like hot cakes initially but is doing poorly now on HSN - reviews are not favorable. I think HSN should be looking beyond the glitz and novelty. They should consider the practical - especially in these economic times. Your headbands would have sold very well...especially now at holiday time. Perfect stocking stuffers! That's just my two cents. That, and I think you are one very special lady. Ginny

  69. Tracy,

Hope all is well. You were missed last night when we met here to talk to Deedra. I am surprised you have not checked in. Even still this morning. I'm wondering what your overall thoughts of last nights episode was?

  70. Deedra,

So I'm thinking you probably won't be back on here till late tonight or sometime Sunday or Monday. Cuz of your busy day viewing your episode today, and church tomorrow, but when you return I do have two more questions. Sooooo how did you do how many hits did being on national television produce? Now I realize you were at a disadvantage with the channel change and it not making the channel line up. Also gee a little plug from Kelley would have been nice. One would think it would've been in her best interest to plug the change on her "LIVE" show. I'm really surprised she didn't. She's usually not shy about promoting things that benefit her and taking her personality into consideration she could've had a good time with the actual title name of the show that was advertised in that time slot and having to set her DVR to record "S** Bots." Sorry I got of subject. Just really surprised she didn't do that for the good of the show. Anyway how'd ya do did it boost your hits to your website any?
And my other question I'm curious one of the other disappointments with the layout of the show is that it appears as though they did not help financially. I thought from the way it was presented to us so long ago when I auditioned. I thought they were going to HELP the inventor bring their idea to a degree that it could be presented before HSN. Sooo my question is when they sent you off to prepare and get ready for your HSN presentation did they help financially for you to invest to have more "fashionable" headbands or did you have to take the oh so valuable advice/help they gave you and foot the bill yourself? So that's my curiosity did they help financially in anyway? And I want to order 2 headbands for my daughter for stocking stuffers but probably wouldn't receive them in time for stocking stuffers right? Oh and what about a signed copy of Bible verse ABCs for my boy? Hey do I get step to the front of the line shipping treatment for being such a good cheerleader??? :-)

  72. Mary,

I just got up. :) Hubby let me sleep in! And the day is full with play rehearsal for the kids at church and time with the folks after that. It will be a good day.

For your questions, I don't know about hits yet, it takes a day for the report to come in. Some orders are coming in, but not rolling. Just a handful. Nope, nothing in time for Christmas unless someone wants to pay a HUGE fee to cover crazy shipping. And no, HM did NOT pay for any development of the Klipzon except to provide for advice from Wendy and Haven. And yes I can give you a copy of a signed book...I'll facebook you info. I'll warn you though, the value of the book does go down once I sign it. :)
